Profile of Malik Joseph
Written by Anya Penherski
Malik Joseph is a three-year senior from Miami, Florida. He plays the electric bass in Popular Music Ensemble. His favorite song to play is “Lying to You” by Amaria, and he loves to “slide on the bass.”
When asked what his favorite performance was, Malik said it was when the Popular Music Ensemble went on tour and performed at Milliken Auditorium in Traverse City. He described the experience as feeling like he was in a movie: he was with the people he loves, sharing the same passion with them, and playing on expensive equipment.
His favorite thing about IAA is the community. Malik said, “[IAA] is one of the only places in the world that has so many people that love art as it does, and I don’t feel alone.”
A fun fact about Malik is that he’s left-handed. He enjoys drinking tea over coffee and even complimented the tea at IAA, saying, “The tea is extravagant.” It healed his voice when he almost lost it.
He also prefers the cold weather here as opposed to the warmth of Miami. Malik enjoys the food at Stone Cafeteria, and his favorite meal there is the potstickers.
A show at school he enjoyed—and one many students might know him from—is the Greenhouse Pavilion performance. Malik is looking forward to many future performances such as collage, community meetings, holiday dinners, the Greenhouse Pavilion show, his senior recital, and many more.
