Profile of Elian Rangel

Written by Mati Held

Elian Rangel is a 17-year-old, two-year senior at IAA, originally from Chacala, Nayarit, in Mexico. He studies composition, but his passions go far beyond the music stand.

A surfer since the age of five, Elian describes surfing as a big adrenaline rush and a space for meditation, a balance that mirrors the way he sees and performs his art with. “There’s the thrill of catching a wave, and then the stillness of waiting for it. I like the contrast of the two,” he comments.

In the future, he hopes to make music that reaches a big audience. Elian hopes to found a music institute, and, of course, to continue surfing. When it comes to collaboration, Elian looks at emerging artists, as he wants to work with up-and-coming voices, especially from other countries and cultures around the world. At IAA he’s inspired by the community and artists around him.

His goals this year are very clear: to get into his top three colleges: Eastman University, University of Michigan, and the Juilliard School.

When asked to describe himself, he said, “[I’m] hyperactive, curious, and adaptable.”

He loves a good conversation and sharing a good espresso. If he were to be in another major at IAA, he would enroll in Film & New Media, since he’s passionate about telling stories with lots of color, texture, and shape. His travels have also shaped his perspective of the world; out of all the places he’s been to, the Amalfi Coast is his favorite due to its beautiful town scenery. Above all, Elian is someone who lives in between energy and calm. Whether it’s through music, surfing, or traveling, he’s ready to chase the next wave.
