A new pedestrian tunnel running beneath J. Maddy Pkwy, the most recent addition to IAA’s campus, had its official ribbon cutting ceremony on Oct. 24, with the first day of official use of the tunnel scheduled for Dec. 10. Tunnel construction began on Aug. 6, and when completed, the tunnel will provide safe crossing and easier travel between Pines Side and the central part of campus, providing a more unified campus experience.
The 104-foot tunnel is assembled from thirteen precast concrete sections, with an interior height of approximately 9.5 feet and a width of 18 feet. To accommodate the new structure, the surrounding roadway has been raised by more than four feet.
The ribbon cutting ceremony held on Oct. 24 included multiple board members of IAA, as well as students and faculty. There was even live music performed by the IAA Brass Choir.
Of the tunnel, ICA President Trey Devey has stated, “This project represents a bold step forward in our efforts to create a more unified Interlochen campus.”
Quinn De Vecchi, the Creative Writing division’s representative on IAA’s Student Representative Board, said, “The ceremony held was exciting. It’s definitely opened the doors for more opportunities.”
Many people are eagerly anticipating the opening of the new tunnel.
